The 2026 KTM 990 Duke R has been officially unveiled for international markets, marking the arrival of a more performance-focused version of KTM’s middleweight naked streetfighter. First shown at the 2024 EICMA show, the R variant brings increased power, upgraded hardware, and advanced electronics, with European dealership arrivals expected soon.
More Power From the Same Parallel-Twin Engine
At the heart of the KTM 990 Duke R is the familiar 947cc, DOHC, parallel-twin engine used in the standard model. For the R variant, KTM has revised the tuning to extract 127bhp, delivering nearly 6bhp more than the regular 990 Duke.
Key engine and transmission highlights include:
- Maximum power output of 127bhp
- Peak torque unchanged at 103Nm
- Six-speed gearbox
- Bi-directional quick shifter as standard
Larger TFT and Higher-Spec Hardware
One of the most noticeable upgrades on the KTM 990 Duke R is its 8.8-inch TFT touchscreen display, which replaces the smaller TFT unit found on the base model. The new screen supports offline map navigation, enhancing touring and daily usability.
On the hardware front, KTM has equipped the R with fully adjustable WP Apex suspension, including a rear linkage setup, significantly improving handling potential over the standard variant.
Subtle But Meaningful Chassis Changes
Beyond electronics and suspension, the KTM 990 Duke R also features several dimensional changes aimed at sharper dynamics:
- Seat height: 840mm (15mm higher)
- Ground clearance: 210mm (15mm increase)
- Wheelbase: Slightly longer than the standard model
These updates collectively contribute to a more aggressive riding stance and improved performance capability.
Availability and Market Outlook
The KTM 990 Duke R will be sold as a single-seater, with pillion components available as optional accessories. KTM has confirmed that the motorcycle will reach European dealerships soon.
However, the performance-oriented naked is unlikely to be launched in India, as the standard KTM 990 Duke itself is not currently on sale in the market.
