The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Transport of Lumbini Province has announced a 75% discount on fines for vehicle renewal from Shrawan 1 to the end of Poush, 2082. This limited-time scheme aims to bring unrenewed vehicles back under legal registration and boost provincial revenue.
Why the Discount Was Introduced
According to Transport Minister Prachanda Bikram Nyaupane, the province implemented this plan after noticing a decline in vehicle renewal rates in recent years. The government expects this move to encourage vehicle owners to regularize their documents, thereby increasing road safety and state revenue.
“The scheme is designed to bring vehicles back into the renewal system and increase revenue,” Minister Nyaupane stated.
Last Fiscal Year Revenue and Current Challenges
In the previous fiscal year, Lumbini Province earned NPR 23.52 crore through the renewal of vehicle registrations and driving licenses. However, this only accounted for about 60% of the estimated potential income, indicating a significant gap in compliance.
The ministry also highlighted that vehicles not renewed often avoid fines by speeding and engaging in reckless behavior, leading to a higher risk of road accidents. Addressing this concern, the fine waiver is expected to also contribute to reducing traffic-related incidents.
